The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) Training Portal provides information for anyone interested in learning about becoming a Peer Recovery Specialist in Virginia. This portal includes the process and training necessary to become a PRS.
The 72-hour Training is the only training accepted by the Virginia Certification Board as part of the certification process. In Virginia, DBHDS is the sole manager of this training process. All trainings and trainers listed have been approved by DBHDS. If you find a training that is not listed, please ensure that the trainer is on the approved trainer list.

Endorsement Training
These trainings are taught by authorized DBHDS trainers. Endorsement Trainings include Certified Older Adult Peer Specialist (COAPS), Gaming & Gambling (Problem Gambling), Crisis Services, and Integrated Forensic Peer Specialist (i-FPRS).
You must have completed the 72-hour Training before you can attend the Crisis Services Endorsement Training class. You must be certified through the Virginia Certification Board or NAADAC before you can attend the COAPS, Gaming & Gambling, and i-FPRS Endorsement Training classes.
The authorized trainer will notify you of the status of your application once reviewed. After completing the 72-hour training, you may seek your certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist then participate in Endorsement Trainings.
Certification Corner
For certification to be recognized in Virginia, you must complete the DBHDS 72-hour PRS curriculum.
Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veteran Affairs
Veterans have the choice to obtain their peer specialist certification through a state-approved peer specialist certification training organization and then seek their employment in VHA. Section 405 of Public Law 110-387 (2008).
Virginia Certification Board (VCB)
This Board grants the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist credential in Virginia. Learn More
